My name is James and I'm a Medicinal Chemist.

When I'm not trying to synthesize new anti-cancer drugs in the lab, I'm trying to reduce my energy consumption and limit my environmental impact at home.

That's where biodiesel comes into play, I've been using waste vegetable oil as a diesel substitute since 2001.

Much of the waste cooking oil from restaurants ends up being landfilled or poured down the drain, the used oil I collect is recycled into a  fuel which is carbon neutral, reducing CO2 emissions.

During October 2001, my Peugeot 206 was fitted with a prototype from SmartVeg, a unique conversion kit which let me use waste cooking oil instead of diesel as a fuel.

During 2005 I featured in a report by BBC News Oxford and an article was written in the Sunday Observer. To cut a long adventure short, I sold the Peugeot after driving over 70,000 miles on waste oil and bought a VW Passat.

2009-present day - I'm collecting waste vegetable oil from pubs, restaurants, schools and individuals across South Oxfordshire and West Berkshire and converting the used oil into biodiesel, of which we run two family cars: Two VW Passats.
